The "Songs and Dances" adapted here cover a wide range of folklore: Hungarian Ruthenian Arabic and Transylvanian while Bartok's version of the "Petite Suite" included Hungarian Walachian Ukrainian and Roumanian folk material. This set of piano adaptations follows Bartok's approach of a non-literal transcription and that of a free adaptation that takes into consideration the moods of the original composition and the potential of pianistic sonorities.
