Beethoven gave this sonata the unusual title "Sonata quasi una Fantasia", which she shares with the much more famous "Moonlight Sonata" like the opus number. Both sonatas - together with the preceding sonata with the funeral march op. 26 and the soon following three sonatas op. 31 - usher in Beethoven's conquest of new musical territory in this genre. In its complex structure, which alternates between fantasy and sonata, Opus 27 No. 1 pianists has always been confronted with great interpretational tasks that - when they have been mastered - bring to life a true jewel. The G. Henle Verlag now also presents this sonata in a new edition with the tried and tested fingering and instructions for the interpretation of Murray Perahia, edited by the Beethoven team Gertsch-Perahia.
