The piano rhapsodies of Liszt are in the tradition of his transcriptions of opera or song themes, but use folk dances and songs as a source material. Completed in 1864, Rhapsody espagnole is a late reminiscence of Liszt's extended journey to Spain and Portugal in 1844-45. On the basis of two popular Iberian dance songs, Folia and Jota, Liszt fires here a firework of characteristic rhythms and timbres with highly virtuoso finale in Presto tempo. The long inaccessible autograph of the composition is now visible again - occasion for the G. Henle Verlag to submit its Urtext edition of a revision.
