The six sonatas by Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) are, along with those by Antonio Vivaldi, one of the best-known baroque compositions for cello and basso continuo. Even in the lifetime of the composer, who was very famous at the time, the collection was offered in print in the important European music cities of London, Paris and Amsterdam. Even if there are some uncomfortable fingerings in these sonatas that may stem from the fact that Marcello was expecting a five-string cello supplemented with an e'string, they are of moderate difficulty and belong to the standard works of cello teaching.
