At the beginning of 1845 Robert Schumann, together with Clara, embarked on an intensive course of contrapuntal studies in Dresden. The results are apparent in several groups of works written within a relatively shortperiod, including the Six Studies in Canonic Form Op. 56 for pedal pian o, the Four Sketches Op. 58 for pedal piano, the Six Fugues Op. 60 for organ or pedal piano and the Four Fugues Op. 72 for piano.
